A nicotine pouch is a small, discreet pouch placed between the lip and gum. The nicotine is absorbed through the lining of the mouth. Most nicotine pouches contain no tobacco leaf, and there is nothing to smoke, spit or light.

What is inside a pouch

  • Nicotine: the active ingredient, in a set amount per pouch.
  • Filler: usually a plant-based fiber that gives the pouch its body.
  • Flavor: food-grade flavoring, which sets the taste.
  • Sweeteners and pH adjusters: to balance taste and help the nicotine release.
  • Pouch material: a porous fabric that holds the contents and lets saliva and nicotine pass through.

How a pouch is manufactured

The filler, nicotine and flavors are blended into a uniform mix. Machines then dose a fixed amount into the pouch material and seal it. Finished pouches are counted into cans, sealed and labeled. Quality checks run throughout: nicotine content, flavor consistency, moisture and microbial limits.

Dry, semi-dry and wet processes

The process affects moisture and mouthfeel:

  • Dry: low moisture. The pouch feels lighter and releases flavor and nicotine in a different pattern.
  • Semi-dry: a middle ground between dry and wet.
  • Wet: higher moisture. The pouch feels softer and releases quickly.

Choosing the right process is part of the formulation work. Different markets prefer different feels.

Formats and finishes

Pouches come in slim, mini and regular sizes. The seal can be flat, embossed or ultrasonic. Some pouches include a Crush Ball, a small flavor capsule that releases when bitten. See all options on our products page.

How pouches differ from oral film

Oral dissolving film is a thin sheet that dissolves on the tongue, leaving no pouch to remove. Onset is quick, around three minutes. Some brands sell film alongside pouches as a companion format. Read more about our nicotine oral film.
